Learn how to grow and arrange with garden roses, the floral stars of midsummer.
The Rose is surely the Queen of all flowers and at the top of our (long) favourites list. We use these ravishing beauties in almost every arrangement during the summer months.. The soft, relaxed character of garden varieties makes them incredibly versatile focal flowers and their scent with all of it’s nuances is irresistible. We now have a second rose tunnel so there are even more varieties to experience and add to your own wish lists.
There is very little information out there on growing garden roses for cutting, and so this day will be about sharing Rachel’s 16 years of growing experience with you. Find out more about sourcing the best stock , planting bare root, her top 10 varieties, pruning for stem length, feeding and dead-heading to prolong flowering. You will put into practise how to pick to retain the vigour of your plants, the correct stage of harvest and conditioning for a long vase life.
Of course, every star needs a supporting cast so we will also be selecting what else to grow to achieve a good balance of shapes, textures and colours in your summer arrangements. There is so much to choose from our fields and tunnels at this peak flowering time.
Rachel will demonstrate how she works with roses in her floral designs and what she likes to arrange with them to balance and enhance their form and colour. She is a firm believer in the vase being equally as important as the florals and now with her own pottery studio on the farm she has handmade some deep footed bowls to show the roses off to their best.
After a two course home cooked lunch made with fresh produce from the kitchen garden we will spend the afternoon arranging in the beautifully restored coaching barn next to our flower fields. Once you have completed your bowl arrangement Rachel will show you how to make a garden-gathered style rose bouquet
You will take home your arrangement, bouquet, lots of growing and arranging tips and five packets of seeds varieties that work well with roses.
