This year we are holding a series of workshops exploring how flowers inspire other creative pursuits including printing, painting, natural plant dyeing, photography and flower pressing. Our flower farm will provide the inspiration, subject matter and materials. The teaching will be from a line up of talented artists and makers whose work I admire including Jam Jar Edit, The Natural Dyeworks, Éva Németh and Allie Sylvester.
In May we will be joined by Amy and Melissa of Jam Jar Edit for an introduction to flower pressing. I have long admired their pressed flower artworks and would love to learn how to do it myself so that I can adorn the walls in my house with one of their signature meadow pieces. It would be a lovely reminder of our summer flowers on a wintery evening.
In the morning after a tour of the flower farm you will learn how to select and prepare suitable late spring flowers from our cutting beds and learn how to press and preserve a variety of specimens using traditional flower pressing techniques.
After a home cooked lunch using produce from our kitchen garden you will work with flowers that have been pressed for you in advance to learn techniques for mounting artworks using a variety of handmade papers and materials – all yours to take home to further your pursuits in the art of flower pressing.
To finish the day Rachel will guide you through cutting flowers and arranging a garden-gathered bouquet.
You will take home a filled flower press (27.5 x 17.5cm), three A5 artworks, a bouquet of seasonal flowers and the knowledge and hopefully desire to further your pursuits in the art of flower pressing.
